Shadow of the Road launches on PC on November 12, 2026, through Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store. It's a turn-based tactical RPG set in an alternate 1868 Japan, made by the Warsaw studio Another Angle Games and published by Owlcat Games, the Pathfinder and Rogue Trader studio.
With about two months to go, the Steam page still has blanks where the specs should be. On September 10, 2026, its CPU and GPU fields were empty and it showed no price at all. So what's actually known comes from the free demo, on Steam since July 2025, and from six years of developer posts.
Note
Key Takeaways
- Release date: November 12, 2026, on PC only (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store). No console version has been announced.
- System requirements: not published. The Steam page lists only a 64-bit processor and OS, and the demo page adds Windows 10.
- Price: not listed, and pre-purchase isn't open. A 2020 developer FAQ guessed "somewhere around $30". Treat that as unconfirmed.
- Demo: free and still live. 204 of its 251 Steam reviews are positive.
- Combat: turn-based, built on a shifting initiative Timeline where every hit pushes the target's next turn back.
When Does Shadow of the Road Come Out?
Shadow of the Road releases on November 12, 2026, as a PC game sold through Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store. Another Angle Games announced the date on Steam on August 26, 2026, and RPG Site reported the same store list that day.
This is the game's second release target. When Owlcat revealed it in August 2024, among the first games from its new publishing arm, Bleeding Cool reported a 2025 window. That slipped. In January 2026 the studio published a trailer that pushed the game into 2026 with no month attached, and the November date arrived seven months later.
Shadow of the Road
Game Rating: Unrated (Nov 12, 2026)
Developer: Another Angle Games
The project is older than the Owlcat deal. Its Steam news feed goes back to May 2020, and a 2020 FAQ post describes the team as "a small independent studio Another Angle Games based in Warsaw" working on its first big title. Owlcat signed on in August 2024. According to the developers' announcement, Owlcat handles publishing so the team can "focus on what we do best".
What Are the Shadow of the Road System Requirements?
Shadow of the Road has no published minimum or recommended specs yet, even though the game is about nine weeks from launch. On September 10, 2026, the Steam store page showed empty OS, Processor and Graphics fields under both columns. The only line filled in reads "Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system".
The demo's Steam page adds one detail: Windows 10. That's all the official information there is. Any "Shadow of the Road system requirements" table you find elsewhere with a named GPU is guesswork until Owlcat fills those fields in.
What the Demo Suggests About Performance
The only public performance note comes from Tom's Gaming Vault. Its October 2025 demo impressions reported the frame rate "dumping my FPS down from 60 to 40 occasionally", which the writer called "iffy" for a turn-based game. The piece doesn't say what hardware was used, so it tells you the demo wasn't fully tuned rather than what card you need.
In a turn-based game, dips like that matter less for input and more for how smooth the camera feels while you pan around. If your machine already struggles with modern isometric RPGs, the free demo is the test that counts. Our guide to fixing stuttering in PC games covers the usual suspects, and what 1% lows actually measure explains why a 60-to-40 drop feels worse than the average suggests.
| # | Requirement | What Steam lists (Sept 10, 2026) |

| 1 | Operating system | 64-bit required; Windows 10 on the demo page |
| 2 | Processor | Blank |
| 3 | Graphics | Blank |
| 4 | Memory and storage | Not listed |
| 5 | Steam Deck | No compatibility rating yet |
| 6 | Mac and Linux | Windows only; a 2020 FAQ called Mac/Linux versions "very unlikely" |
| 7 | Controller | Full controller support listed |

How Much Will Shadow of the Road Cost?
No price has been announced, and the Steam page doesn't offer pre-purchase or special editions. The only figure on record is old: in the 2020 FAQ, the developers wrote that "the base price will be somewhere around $30."
That was four years before a publisher came aboard and two release windows ago, and neither Owlcat nor the studio has repeated the figure since. Until a price appears on the store page, $30 is a historical guess, not a confirmed number.
Is There a Shadow of the Road Demo?
Yes, a free demo has been on Steam since July 15, 2025, and it's still downloadable ahead of the November launch. As of September 10, 2026 it holds a Very Positive rating, with 204 positive reviews out of 251.
The developers called the demo's slice of the game "feature complete". It follows Satoru and Akira through a political mess at the Ryokan Yasumi inn, then moves to the Sugiyama estate, where Ishida, Asuke and the boy Toshiro join the party. Tom's Gaming Vault described two maps, the second at night in the rain, and found the demo "a little on the easy side".
The Earlier Playtest
Before the demo came a free Open Alpha, which started on March 25, 2025. According to the studio's survey afterwards, over 72% of respondents finished the alpha, they rated combat 4.11 out of 5, and more than 81% quickly understood the initiative Timeline. Only about 65% used consumable items at all. The developers read that as caution with supplies, not a shortage.
French and German localisations were added on October 20, 2025. The full game lists English with full audio, plus Russian, German, French and Simplified Chinese.
What Is Shadow of the Road About?
Shadow of the Road is set in a reimagined 1868 Japan split by civil war. On one side are the forces of Shōgun Tokugawa. On the other is Emperor Mutsuhito's army, which has better technology and is backed by the British East Nippon Company.
You start with two rōnin, Satoru and Akira, recruited by Tokugawa's spymaster to protect a boy with "immense, uncontrollable powers". The Steam description promises that party choices decide whether characters "form new bonds, sever lifelong friendships, or mend fractured family ties."
Yōkai from Japanese folklore turn up as enemies, and the developers have teased Ne-no-kuni, the "Land of Roots", a spirit world beneath the mountains where travellers are said to vanish. A January 2026 post was unusually candid, admitting that real late-19th-century Japan "was far more diverse and complex than any game narrative allows". The two-sided war is deliberately simplified to carry the game's themes about the cost of forced progress.
How Does Combat Work?
Combat is turn-based and isometric, and it's built on a shared Timeline rather than fixed rounds. Every ally and enemy has an Initiative value, and that number keeps moving during a fight.
According to the developers' July 2025 breakdown, every damaging hit causes Distraction, which lowers the target's Initiative. Some abilities drain Initiative over several turns. The side that starts the fight gets a temporary boost. If a character's Initiative drops below zero, their current turn ends immediately. Tom's Gaming Vault summed it up: turn order "can and will get manipulated by everything that happens in combat."
Damage Zones and the Environment
Ranged attacks lose power over distance. Past the dotted line on the grid, shots deal 25% less damage, which the developers note hurts most on critical hits. Most bows split their reach 50/50 between the close and far bands; most guns run 75/25, so they keep full damage further out. Magic ignores the zones entirely.
The battlefield can be broken, too. A March 2025 devlog explained that barrels and boulders have their own durability, and an attack through breakable cover splits damage between the obstacle and the enemy behind it. Devlogs from 2024 added two more layers. A stealth mode reveals where enemies can see and what ground they control. Co-op skills become available once two characters' relationship is strong enough.
Who Is in the Party?
Six party members have been named so far, and the studio has given five of them their own "Travellers of the Road" profile on Steam. More companions join in later chapters, but the developers haven't said who.
- Satoru: a samurai turned rōnin, and where the story begins.
- Takagi Akira: a bow specialist who relies on delayed shots and needs "a deeper understanding of the game's initiative system".
- Ishida, "the Boulder": the tank, with a stunning headbutt and a sweeping no-dachi.
- Asuke: a spellcaster who does little direct damage and shifts allies and enemies along the Timeline instead. She is Toshiro's mother.
- Toshiro: the boy at the centre of the mission. He joins in the demo, but his combat role hasn't been detailed.
- Hiroe: a daimyō's daughter, introduced in August 2026, whose arrogance the studio calls "the armour she donned".
Owlcat and Another Angle haven't given a campaign length. The one production figure on record is from 2022, when the studio said it had written roughly 50,000 words of dialogue and finished 4 of 17 planned levels.

Is Shadow of the Road Coming to Consoles?
No console version has been announced, so the November 12 launch is PC-only, with no port window or target platform named anywhere official. Windows Central's release-date headline put it bluntly: the game "isn't coming to Xbox (or Play Anywhere)."
The only hint otherwise is from 2020, when the studio's FAQ said there were "some plans related to console versions" but that PC came first. Six years on, nothing has been confirmed, so treat any console port as a rumour. If you want tactical RPGs on other platforms, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is the Switch 2 option, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword covers the same Edo-era samurai-and-demons territory as an action game.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Shadow of the Road release date?
November 12, 2026, on PC through Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store. Another Angle Games announced the date on August 26, 2026. The game had first been expected in 2025, then moved to an unspecified 2026 window in January 2026.
What are the minimum requirements for Shadow of the Road?
Shadow of the Road's minimum requirements haven't been published yet. The Steam page lists only a 64-bit processor and operating system, with blank CPU and GPU fields, and the demo page adds Windows 10. The free demo is the most reliable way to check your PC until full specs go up.
Is Shadow of the Road on Steam Deck?
As of September 10, 2026, Valve hasn't rated Shadow of the Road for Steam Deck, so it has no Verified or Playable badge. The store page does list full controller support, which helps, but nobody knows how the full game will run on the Deck until Valve tests it.
How much does Shadow of the Road cost?
Shadow of the Road has no listed price, 63 days before launch. A 2020 developer FAQ estimated a base price "somewhere around $30", but that was before Owlcat became the publisher, and it hasn't been confirmed since.
Is Shadow of the Road like XCOM or Baldur's Gate 3?
PCGamesN has compared it to both, calling it "like XCOM 2 mixed with steampunk" in one 2025 headline and "Baldur's Gate 3 style" in another. Combat uses XCOM-style cover and grid positioning, while the party dialogue and relationship systems are closer to a CRPG. The main thing it adds is the Timeline, where hits delay enemy turns instead of simply trading damage.
Should You Wishlist It?
Wishlist it if you like tactics with a story attached and you're comfortable buying from a first-time studio. The demo is well reviewed, and few indie tactics games document their combat rules this openly before launch. Against that: one missed window already, and a store page that's still missing specs and a price nine weeks out.
Download the free demo first and see how it runs on your machine. For more tactics on PC, Star Wars Zero Company is the other big XCOM-style release on the calendar. If you prefer steampunk as a first-person RPG, Clockwork Revolution comes in 2027. And if you're weighing a GPU upgrade before either, start with how much VRAM you need for gaming.
How this was checked: every date, review count and store field above was read from Steam's store and news pages on September 10, 2026. Respawno hasn't benchmarked the demo, so the only performance data here is Tom's Gaming Vault's, and it names no hardware.
The header image is a screenshot from a different samurai game, used for illustration only; it is not Shadow of the Road footage. Shadow of the Road is a trademark of Another Angle Games and Owlcat Games.
