The Witcher 4 is CD PROJEKT RED's next flagship RPG, built in Unreal Engine 5 with Ciri as the playable protagonist, and it will not release before 2027 (CD PROJEKT, 2025). As of April 30, 2026 the project had 513 developers assigned to it, more than double the team that shipped The Witcher 3.

That headcount is the single most useful number in this whole story. Studios do not put 513 people on a game that is close to shipping, and CD PROJEKT has now told investors the game misses its own December 31, 2026 incentive window. If you are budgeting your hype, budget it for 2027 at the earliest.

Note

Key Takeaways

  • Ciri is the confirmed playable protagonist, not Geralt, and the first game in a planned trilogy.
  • The setting is Kovir, a wealthy northern trade region never before playable in the series.
  • The June 2025 tech demo ran on a base PlayStation 5 at 60 FPS, with 300 individually animated NPCs in one market scene.
  • 513 developers were on the project as of April 30, 2026, up from 499 two months earlier.
  • CD PROJEKT has confirmed no launch before 2027 and has still not given a date.

What Is The Witcher 4 and Who Is Making It?

The Witcher 4 is the first entry in a new Witcher trilogy from CD PROJEKT RED, codenamed Polaris, developed in Unreal Engine 5 rather than the studio's in-house REDengine (CD PROJEKT, 2025). It entered full-scale production at the end of 2024.

The engine switch is not cosmetic. CD PROJEKT is co-developing UE5 features with Epic Games and folding them back into the public engine, which is why the studio's technology now shows up at Epic's own State of Unreal keynotes rather than in a private trailer.

The trilogy plan matters too. CFO Piotr Nielubowicz has said the studio intends to ship all three games within a six-year span, a cadence that would have been impossible on REDengine. Whether that survives contact with reality is a separate question, but it explains the engine decision better than any marketing line.

Is Ciri the Protagonist of The Witcher 4?

Yes. Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon is the playable protagonist of The Witcher 4, confirmed on stage at State of Unreal 2025, where she appeared as a fully trained witcher taking a paid monster contract (CD PROJEKT, 2025). Geralt is not the lead.

This is a bigger structural change than it looks. Ciri has Elder Blood and the ability to move between worlds, so the studio has had to design a protagonist who is canonically more powerful than Geralt without letting that power trivialise the game.

What Changed With Ciri

A Working Witcher, Not a Chosen One

The demo framed her as a professional taking a contract for coin, the same economic loop that anchored The Witcher 3. The fantasy is the job, not the destiny.

Power Is Being Deliberately Reined In

CD PROJEKT has signalled that Ciri will not begin at the power level she ends The Witcher 3 with. Expect a narrative reason for the reset rather than a silent nerf.

Kelpie Returns

Her horse Kelpie is in, filling the Roach role. Traversal appears to be built around mounted movement across long distances again.

Fan reaction to Ciri's older character model was loud and, frankly, mostly noise. Voice actor Doug Cockle — Geralt himself — publicly pushed back on the criticism. The relevant question is whether her combat kit feels distinct from Geralt's sword-and-Signs template, and that has not been shown yet.

Where Is The Witcher 4 Set? Kovir Explained

The Witcher 4 is set in Kovir, a northern kingdom built on trade and mining that has historically stayed out of the Nilfgaardian wars, and which has never been playable in a Witcher game before (CD PROJEKT, 2025). The tech demo moved from mountain wilderness to the port town of Valdrest and ended at Lan Exeter, Kovir's winter capital.

Kovir is a smart pick. In Sapkowski's books it is the rich neutral party — the place that sells weapons to everyone and fights for no one. That gives CD PROJEKT a setting with class conflict and commerce baked in, rather than another war-scarred Velen.

Valdrest and Lan Exeter

Valdrest is the bustling port town shown mid-demo, and it is where the crowd technology got its workout. Lan Exeter closed the presentation: a winter capital of canals and stone, shown only briefly and clearly held back as a reveal for later.

What Did the Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo Actually Show?

The demo ran in real time on a base PlayStation 5 at 60 frames per second, using Nanite Foliage, the Unreal Animation Framework, MetaHuman, and Mass AI crowd scaling (CD PROJEKT, 2025). During the Valdrest market sequence the team raised the NPC count live to 300 individually animated characters.

Two caveats deserve equal billing. First, CD PROJEKT explicitly labelled it a tech demo, not gameplay. Second, the 60 FPS figure is on a base PS5 with no combat, no quest logic, and no save system running underneath.

Warning

A tech demo is a best case built to showcase specific features. Nanite Foliage and Mass AI are real and shipping in UE5, but nothing here tells you what The Witcher 4 costs to run on PC once AI, physics, and gameplay systems are competing for the same frame budget. Treat it as a floor for visual ambition, not a performance promise.

#TechnologyWhat It Does
1Nanite FoliageRenders dense vegetation at high detail without manual LOD work
2Unreal Animation FrameworkBlends animation layers for smoother traversal and mounted movement
3MetaHumanGenerates high-fidelity faces and facial performance
4Mass AIScales crowd simulation to hundreds of independently animated NPCs
5FastGeo StreamingStreams world geometry to hold a stable frame budget

When Is The Witcher 4 Release Date?

There is no announced release date. CD PROJEKT has confirmed the game will not launch by the end of 2026, and in 2026 told investors it falls outside the first target window of its employee incentive programme, which closes December 31, 2026. The realistic earliest window is 2027.

Nielubowicz's phrasing at the FY2024 investor conference has not softened since: the studio does "not plan to release The Witcher 4 by the end of 2026," and when pressed on 2027 he declined to commit.

Reading the Timeline

Headcount Is Still Climbing

499 developers on February 28, 2026 became 513 by April 30, 2026. Teams grow through production and peak before content lock, not after it.

The Incentive Window Slipped

Missing the December 2026 internal target is the clearest signal the studio has given, because it costs them something real.

Why the Hiring Spree Matters

Between December 2025 and mid-2026, CD PROJEKT added notable names: Baldur's Gate 3 cinematic director Felix Pedulla, former Blizzard composer Russell Brower, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 cinematic animator Lucie Hennet. The studio has said the new hires are largely there to widen scope and push the tech demo's techniques across the whole game.

Scope expansion late in production is exactly the thing that moves dates. It is good news for the finished product and bad news for anyone hoping for 2027 specifically.

What About PC System Requirements?

Nothing has been published. No minimum spec, no recommended spec, no target resolution or frame rate for PC.

What you can reason about is the shape of the problem. A UE5 title leaning on Nanite Foliage and Lumen is going to be VRAM-hungry and shader-compilation-heavy, which are the two things that most often ruin a PC launch. Our guide to how much VRAM you actually need in 2026 covers why 8GB cards keep hitting a wall in exactly this class of game, and if you are planning a rig for it, the 1440p build guide is a more sensible starting point than guessing at requirements two years early.

What We Still Don't Know

CD PROJEKT has not confirmed a release date, a price, PC system requirements, whether the game is open world in the Witcher 3 sense, or how combat differs from Geralt's.

Open questions worth tracking:

  1. How does Ciri fight? No combat gameplay has been shown at all.
  2. Is it one contiguous open world? FastGeo Streaming hints at it; nobody has said it.
  3. Does Geralt appear? Unconfirmed either way.
  4. What is the monetisation model? No word on DLC or expansions.
  5. Will there be a next-gen-only cutoff? Likely, but unannounced.

Anything more specific than that is somebody's guess wearing a headline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Geralt in The Witcher 4?

CD PROJEKT RED has not confirmed whether Geralt appears. Ciri is the playable protagonist, and the studio has been careful to present this as her story rather than a handoff cameo. Doug Cockle remains Geralt's voice actor and has spoken publicly about the game, but a role in The Witcher 4 has never been announced.

Do I need to play The Witcher 3 first?

It helps but is not required. The Witcher 4 opens a new trilogy in a new region with a protagonist who is introduced on her own terms. That said, Ciri's relationship with Geralt and Yennefer, and the ending you got in The Witcher 3, are the emotional context the new game is written against.

What platforms is The Witcher 4 coming to?

PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The Unreal Engine 5 tech demo was specifically run on a base PlayStation 5 to demonstrate the game targets standard current-generation hardware rather than only high-end PCs or the PS5 Pro.

Is The Witcher 4 open world?

Unconfirmed. The tech demo showed continuous traversal from wilderness into a populated town without a visible load, and CD PROJEKT demonstrated FastGeo Streaming, which exists to stream large worlds. Neither of those is an official statement that the game is a single seamless open world.

Why is The Witcher 4 taking so long?

Three reasons stack up: CD PROJEKT rebuilt its entire toolchain around Unreal Engine 5, the studio is running two Witcher spin-offs concurrently, and the team has kept growing — 499 developers in February 2026 to 513 in April 2026 — with new hires explicitly brought on to expand scope.

Should You Be Watching This One?

If The Witcher 3 is a game you still think about, yes, but keep the timeline honest. Everything CD PROJEKT has shown is a technology statement, and technology statements are the easiest part of a project like this to get right.

The thing worth waiting for is the first real combat footage. Ciri's kit is where this game either establishes its own identity or reveals itself as Geralt with different hair. Until that shows up, treat every "release date confirmed" headline as recycled.

While you wait, our upcoming PC games hub tracks what is actually dated, and Assetto Corsa EVO covers a PC release with far less speculation attached to it.
